- Strauss was a well known Skat player, a german three-handed card game.
- Strauss was born to be a musician. His father was a Principal Horn player who gave Strauss a solid music education. His father inspired his horn concertos, which are now a staple repertoire in the horn community.
- Strauss dropped out of university in Munich to become a music student in Berlin.
